Folk blues roots world with a pinch of jazz and a hint of Americana
Driven by the diverse insightful songs of Steve Robinson your feet will move to the intoxicating latin soul and Middle Eastern rhythms while your mind adventures through love life and laughter, and the socio political questions and disasters of modern life.
Money Killed Jonny's latest album, Cool Hand has been so well received in Australia that the first run sold out and is now on its second pressing. As testimony to its surprising broad appeal the album has been picked up by Adult Contemporary radio stations such as ABC FM and 89.7 Eastside FM, and also indie rock/pop stations such as FBi FM.
Residing somewhere between a road trip, the corporate mess and urban survival you’ll find influences as varied as Fats Waller, Louie Armstrong, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, the Cruel Sea, Nick Cave, Dave Brubeck Quartet, Vince Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Zap Mama, Juju Orchestra, Monsieur Camembert, Buena Vista Social Club, Bill Withers, Lonnie Johnson, Django Reinhardt, film noir, underground black and white, B grade and Blacksploitation movies.
The name “Money Killed Jonny” comes from the well known saying “Money is the root of all evil”, where motivation to amass huge wealth or the need to just financially survive will kill us all in the end. The use of the name “Jonny” is as a title for “everyone” and although seeming male it was inspired by a woman of that name spelt with the no “h” and the double “n”.
Love it! Think I listened to it 5 times straight haha… I seriously did.” Rene Doebritz

People often ask me about this guitar and yep it is pretty fancy. It’s a very generous and amazing gift from my long time friend and collaborator Ed Lee. A reissue Epiphone Emperor that he found in a pawn shop in Campbelltown. It certainly had lived a bit and was fairly messed up with stickers all over it. Ed cleaned it up, did a bit of work on the neck and set it up really nicely for us. Sounds best through a vintage Moody amp but I generally put it through a 40 watt Marshall.
"... This curse is so sweet it makes the heart admit defeat.." Love the moody, cinematic sheen that vibes off your music guys and really diggin the swampy, post-midnight husk of "Weak Minded Heart" ... that's such a killer tune and fantastic vocal!
